Announced by the National Office
Posted on: Friday, November 3, 2017

All current Boy Scouts — even those who completed their Eagle Scout board of review before Aug. 1, 2017 — are now entitled to receive Eagle Palms for merit badges earned before their Eagle board of review.

Previously, only those Scouts with an Eagle board of review date on or after Aug. 1, 2017, were eligible for these Eagle Palms. Now all current Eagle Scouts can receive Palms for additional merit badges earned before their board.

What’s new affects young men who became Eagle Scouts and who had not passed their 18th birthday before Aug. 1, 2017. Now those current Eagle Scouts can immediately apply for and receive Eagle Palms for merit badges earned before their board of review.

Wood Badge is a world-class leadership development program intended for all Scout leaders who have complete the basic training for their position. The objectives of Wood Badge are to help Scouters:

  • View Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated, value-based programs that provides age-appropriate activities for youth.
  • Recognize the contemporary leadership concepts utilized in corporate America and leading government organizations that are relevant to our values-based movement.
  • Apply the skills learned from your participation as a member of a successful working team.
  • Revitalize your committment to youth by sharing in an overall inspirational experience that helps provide Scouting with the leadership it needs to accomplish its mission on an ongoing basis.

Cinematography merit badge becomes Moviemaking merit badge
Posted on: Saturday, February 8, 2014

Think of it as the long-awaited sequel. Cinematography merit badge is now Moviemaking merit badge. The design of the badge hasn't changed, but new pamphlets have been released and should have been available in Scout shops since mid-November.

Why make this change? Well, anyone who sticks around to watch a movie’s credits knows that cinematography is just one specific part of making a movie. So calling a merit badge that covers all of moviemaking “Cinematography” was something of a misnomer.

Many years ago, men raced by means of dogs and sledges across the frozen wastes of Alaska in search of GOLD! Scouting has capitalized on this theme and have developed the Klondike Derby as an activity for Scouts.
Each dog team (so called because two to five Scouts act as huskies) form a separate expedition, and follows a course outlined on a map given to the team. The map guides the team over the field course to simulate “cities”, with authentic Alaskan and fictitious names. Each team driver (patrol leader) is handed a sealed envelope containing his instructions. Teams line up at the starting line, are checked for readiness, equipment, etc., and when told are away on the trail. They tear open their sealed orders containing course directions, maps etc. Each team then starts off for a different city as shown on its map.
